Who is Summer to Morty?

Summer is Morty's older sister in Rick and Morty. She is the teenage daughter of Beth and Jerry Smith and the granddaughter of Rick Sanchez, making her part of the same family that anchors the series' domestic storylines.

Summer is 17 years old and attends Harry Herpson High School with her younger brother Morty. Although Morty initially spends more time accompanying Rick on interdimensional adventures, Summer increasingly joins them and often proves more capable, practical, and emotionally perceptive than Morty.

A common mix-up is confusing Summer's relationship to Rick: she is his granddaughter, not his daughter. Her mother, Beth, is Rick's daughter. The family also exists in multiple realities, and the Summer seen through much of the series is associated with the Smith family living in Dimension C-131 after the events of “Rick Potion #9.”

Summer was originally voiced by Spencer Grammer in the animated series. Her character is often more socially conventional than Morty, but her confidence, intelligence, and willingness to challenge Rick make her an important adventuring partner rather than merely a supporting sibling.
