Who is rugby league’s leading career try-scorer, with 796 tries?

The story behind the answer

Brian Bevan is rugby league’s leading career try-scorer, with 796 tries.

The Australian winger scored 796 tries in 620 senior matches, most notably during an extraordinary career with Warrington in England. His finishing, pace and aerial ability made him one of the most productive attacking players in the sport’s history.

Bevan joined Warrington in 1946 after moving from Australia and spent most of his playing career with the club. He became closely identified with the team and helped it win major honours, including the Challenge Cup and the Championship.

The record is sometimes confused with records for international tries or tries in a single competition. Bevan’s figure refers to his total senior rugby league career. His achievements were recognised when he became the first rugby league player inducted into the Rugby League Hall of Fame in 1988.
