Who is revealed to be Strider in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings?

The story behind the answer

Strider is the name used by Aragorn in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings.

Frodo and his companions first meet Strider at the Prancing Pony in Bree. He appears to be a dangerous-looking Ranger, but he is secretly Aragorn, heir of Isildur and a major figure in the history of Gondor and Arnor. His knowledge of the wilderness helps protect the hobbits after they leave the Shire.

Aragorn’s identity is gradually explained as the story progresses. He is the son of Arathorn II and was raised in Rivendell under the protection of Elrond. Aragorn also uses the name Estel during part of his youth. His long life includes years spent travelling and serving secretly among the peoples of Middle-earth.

The name Strider reflects both his Ranger identity and the suspicion surrounding him in Bree. Aragorn eventually accepts his royal heritage, becomes King Elessar, and marries Arwen after the defeat of Sauron.
