Who is named as the builder and captain of the ark in the Genesis Flood story?

The story behind the answer

Noah is the person named in Genesis as the builder and occupant responsible for the ark.

Genesis presents God instructing Noah to build the vessel because a Flood is coming. Noah then enters the ark with his wife, his sons, and his sons’ wives, along with the animals described in the narrative. The text does not name a separate shipbuilder, captain, or crew.

Noah’s three sons are Shem, Ham, and Japheth. They are passengers and family members in the story, not the person appointed to construct the ark. Methuselah, Noah’s grandfather in the Genesis genealogy, is not described as an ark builder either.

Later Jewish, Christian, and Islamic traditions expand or interpret details of Noah’s story in different ways. In the Genesis account, however, Noah is the central human figure associated with the ark’s construction, preservation of life, and release of the animals after the waters recede.
