Who is Lightning McQueen’s rival, Francesco Bernoulli, in Pixar’s Cars 2?

Francesco Bernoulli is Lightning McQueen’s rival in Pixar’s Cars 2.

Francesco Bernoulli is an Italian Formula-style race car and one of the central competitors in the World Grand Prix. He is designed as a flamboyant, highly confident racer whose rivalry with Lightning McQueen drives much of the film’s racing storyline.

Cars 2 expands the series beyond Radiator Springs. Lightning enters the international World Grand Prix, while Mater becomes involved in an espionage plot after being mistaken for an American secret agent. Francesco’s speed, showmanship, and competitive attitude contrast with Lightning’s growing maturity.

Francesco is voiced by John Turturro in the English-language version. He is not the same character as Jackson Storm, who is Lightning’s principal younger rival in Cars 3, or Chick Hicks, the antagonist from the original Cars. Those distinctions help place Francesco specifically in the second feature film.
