In Pixar’s Cars, which famous race car does Doc Hudson reveal he once was?

The story behind the answer

Doc Hudson reveals that he was once the Fabulous Hudson Hornet in Pixar’s Cars. Before becoming Radiator Springs’ physician and judge, he was a celebrated racer known as the Hudson Hornet.

The character is based on the real Hudson Hornet stock car, a model that dominated early-1950s American racing. In the film’s history, Doc wins three consecutive Piston Cups before a crash ends his racing career and leaves him embittered by the sport’s neglect.

Doc’s story explains his initial reluctance to coach McQueen. Paul Newman provided Doc’s voice, and the role became one of Newman’s final major film performances. The Fabulous Hudson Hornet name also appears in later Cars merchandise and racing references.
