Who is credited as the creator of the Tekken series?

The story behind the answer

Seiichi Ishii is credited as the creator of the Tekken series.

Ishii was a game designer and director at Namco who had previously worked at Sega as a designer on Virtua Fighter. His experience with three-dimensional fighting games helped shape Namco's response to Sega's pioneering arcade series. Tekken began as an internal experiment involving animated 3D character models before developing into a full fighting game.

The first Tekken was released in arcades in 1994 and later ported to the original PlayStation. Ishii directed the project and helped establish its technical and mechanical foundation, including detailed textured characters and a 3D combat system designed for fast play. The game ran on Namco's System 11 hardware, which was based on PlayStation technology.

A common mix-up is crediting Katsuhiro Harada, because Harada became one of the franchise's most recognizable producers and long-term creative leaders. Tomonobu Itagaki and Yu Suzuki are associated with other fighting-game series, not Tekken's creation. Ishii's credit refers to originating the series, while later developers and producers guided its sequels and expanded its story.
