Who invented Coca-Cola in 1886 while working as a pharmacist in Atlanta?

The story behind the answer

John Stith Pemberton invented Coca-Cola in 1886 while working as a pharmacist in Atlanta, Georgia.

Pemberton developed the drink as a patent medicine and first sold it at Jacobs’ Pharmacy. The original beverage contained coca-leaf extract and kola-nut flavoring, which inspired the name “Coca-Cola.”

Pemberton’s invention was soon transferred through a series of business arrangements. Asa Griggs Candler eventually acquired control of the Coca-Cola formula and brand, helping turn the local pharmacy product into a national business.

A common mix-up is confusing Pemberton, the inventor, with Candler, the businessman who built the Coca-Cola Company. Pemberton died in 1888, only two years after creating the drink.
