Who introduced Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson?

The story behind the answer

Stamford introduced Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson in A Study in Scarlet. In the novel’s opening, Watson returns to London after serving as an army medical officer in the Second Anglo-Afghan War and is looking for affordable lodgings.

Stamford, an old acquaintance from St Bartholomew’s Hospital, tells Watson that Holmes is seeking someone with whom to share rent. He brings Watson to meet Holmes, who is investigating chemical reactions in a laboratory. Their conversation reveals that both men have unusual habits and practical reasons for needing a roommate, making the arrangement possible.

The meeting leads to the famous partnership at 221B Baker Street. Holmes becomes the consulting detective, while Watson serves as companion, medical expert, and narrator of many cases. Readers sometimes choose Gregson or Lestrade because both police inspectors appear soon afterward, but they encounter Holmes and Watson during the investigation rather than introducing the pair to one another. Moriarty enters the canon much later.
