What is the title of the final Sherlock Holmes short story collection published by Arthur Conan Doyle?
Answer
The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes
Answer
The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes
The final Sherlock Holmes short story collection published by Arthur Conan Doyle is The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes.
The collection was published in 1927 by John Murray and contains twelve stories. Although the stories appeared in magazines over several years, the book gathered Doyle’s last group of Holmes tales into a single volume. Its British title uses the hyphenated form “Case-Book,” while American and later editions have used variants such as “Case Book” or “Casebook.”
The collection followed His Last Bow, which is why that title is an easy mistake. His Last Bow was published earlier, in 1917, and is not Doyle’s final Holmes collection. The Return of Sherlock Holmes and The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes are earlier collections as well.
The Case-Book has an unusual narrative variety. Most stories are presented through Watson, but “The Blanched Soldier” and “The Lion’s Mane” are narrated by Holmes, while “The Mazarin Stone” uses third-person narration. The volume’s twelve stories complete Doyle’s 56-story short-fiction canon.
