Who introduced Guy Fawkes to Robert Catesby?

The story behind the answer

Thomas Wintour introduced Guy Fawkes to Robert Catesby. Wintour, a Catholic English gentleman and former soldier, met Fawkes on the continent while seeking foreign support for English Catholics.

Catesby had already told Wintour about his plan to blow up Parliament and kill James I. Wintour travelled abroad hoping to obtain Spanish assistance, but those efforts failed. In the Spanish Netherlands, the Welsh Catholic exile Hugh Owen introduced Wintour to Fawkes, who had served as a soldier under Spanish command.

Wintour and Fawkes returned to England in April 1604. Wintour then brought Fawkes into Catesby’s circle. At the conspirators’ first recorded meeting on 20 May 1604, Fawkes joined Catesby, Wintour, John Wright and Thomas Percy. Fawkes’s military background later made him the plot’s explosives specialist. Hugh Owen therefore introduced Fawkes to Wintour; Wintour introduced him to Catesby.
