Who designed the stylized Guy Fawkes mask for V for Vendetta?
Answer
David Lloyd
Answer
David Lloyd
David Lloyd designed the stylized Guy Fawkes mask used in V for Vendetta.
Lloyd was the illustrator of the V for Vendetta graphic novel, written by Alan Moore. He proposed portraying the story’s anarchist protagonist, V, as a theatrical modern version of Guy Fawkes, the conspirator associated with the Gunpowder Plot of 1605. The idea supplied V with a distinctive costume, including the smiling mask.
The design combines a broad upturned moustache, red cheeks, a pointed beard and an exaggerated smile. It was inspired by older Guy Fawkes masks and effigies connected with 5 November celebrations, but Lloyd created the recognizable modern version for the comic.
The answer is sometimes confused because Alan Moore wrote the story and the 2005 film made the image globally famous. Moore was the writer, while Lloyd was the illustrator and mask designer. After the film, the mask became associated with Anonymous, Occupy protests and other movements.
