Answer
Anita Pollitzer
Answer
Anita Pollitzer
Anita Pollitzer introduced Georgia O'Keeffe's charcoal drawings to Alfred Stieglitz in 1916.
Pollitzer was O'Keeffe's former classmate at the University of Virginia and a close friend. In 1916, she showed some of O'Keeffe's abstract charcoal drawings to Alfred Stieglitz, the New York photographer and gallery owner. Stieglitz was impressed and exhibited the drawings at his gallery, 291, without first receiving O'Keeffe's permission.
That exhibition became a decisive turning point. Stieglitz and O'Keeffe began corresponding, and their personal and professional relationship developed over the following years. He later became her husband. Pollitzer's role is sometimes overshadowed by Stieglitz's influence, but she was the person who physically brought the drawings to his attention. The episode also illustrates how O'Keeffe's move toward abstraction reached New York's avant-garde art circle before she became widely known.
