Who introduced Georgia O'Keeffe to Arthur Wesley Dow’s art theories?
Answer
Alon Bement
Answer
Alon Bement
Alon Bement introduced Georgia O'Keeffe to Arthur Wesley Dow’s art theories.
In 1912, O'Keeffe studied with Alon Bement at the University of Virginia summer school. Bement had been a student and colleague of Arthur Wesley Dow, whose teaching emphasized composition through line, color, and form rather than strict imitation of nature. Bement passed those principles on to O'Keeffe.
Dow’s ideas became a major turning point. O'Keeffe began producing abstract charcoal drawings in 1915, works that reduced subjects to expressive arrangements instead of recognizable detail. Those drawings eventually reached Alfred Stieglitz, who exhibited them in New York.
William Merritt Chase was a different teacher from an earlier stage of her education, and Stieglitz became her dealer and husband later. The connection between Bement and Dow is therefore the specific educational link behind this question.
