Who illustrated the 1906 edition of Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens?

Arthur Rackham illustrated the 1906 edition of Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens.

The book adapts material about Peter Pan from J. M. Barrie’s earlier work The Little White Bird, first published in 1902. Barrie’s Kensington Gardens episodes describe Peter as a supernatural infant who leaves his mother and lives among the fairies.

Rackham was one of the leading British illustrators of the Golden Age of Illustration. His drawings for the 1906 edition helped define the visual atmosphere of Barrie’s early Peter Pan material, using detailed line work, dark woodland settings and fantastical fairy figures.

This book should not be confused with the later novel Peter and Wendy or with the 1904 stage play. Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens presents an earlier version of the character, before the familiar Darling family and Neverland plot became central to the story.
