Who illustrated Lewis Carroll's novel Sylvie and Bruno?
Answer
Harry Furniss
Answer
Harry Furniss
Harry Furniss illustrated Lewis Carroll’s novel Sylvie and Bruno.
Furniss was a British illustrator whose career included major work for the Illustrated London News and the satirical magazine Punch. His energetic caricatural style made him a natural collaborator for Carroll’s mixture of fantasy, wordplay, and comic social observation.
Sylvie and Bruno was published in 1889, and Furniss also illustrated its continuation, Sylvie and Bruno Concluded, in 1893. Carroll took an unusually strong interest in the illustrations and closely supervised Furniss’s work.
Their collaboration was not always easy. Carroll’s detailed control over the pictures reportedly frustrated Furniss, who sometimes avoided being available when Carroll visited. After completing the sequel, Furniss vowed never to work for Carroll again. John Tenniel, by contrast, is chiefly associated with Alice, while Henry Holiday illustrated The Hunting of the Snark.
