Who holds the record for the most consecutive Wimbledon women's singles titles?

The story behind the answer

Martina Navratilova holds the record for the most consecutive Wimbledon women’s singles titles, winning six in a row from 1982 through 1987.

Navratilova’s run began after she had already won Wimbledon in 1978 and 1979. She returned to the top in 1982 and then dominated the tournament for six straight championships, defeating players including Chris Evert, Hana Mandlíková and Pam Shriver during that period.

Her overall Wimbledon record is even larger: Navratilova won nine women’s singles titles, a total that remains the Open Era record. Her success came from an unusually effective combination of left-handed serve-and-volley tennis, athletic movement and relentless attacking pressure.

The main historical wrinkle is that “most consecutive” depends on whether the question includes the amateur era. Suzanne Lenglen won five straight titles from 1919 to 1923, but Navratilova’s six-title streak is longer. Billie Jean King, Serena Williams and Steffi Graf all won multiple Wimbledon crowns, but none matched Navratilova’s consecutive run.
