Who holds the record for the highest individual score in a Cricket World Cup?

The story behind the answer

Martin Guptill holds the record for the highest individual score in a Cricket World Cup, making 237 not out for New Zealand. He achieved the feat against the West Indies in the 2015 quarter-final in Wellington.

Guptill faced 163 balls and struck 24 fours and 11 sixes. His unbeaten double century helped New Zealand reach 393, then the highest total in a World Cup knockout match. New Zealand won by 143 runs and advanced to the semi-final, where they defeated South Africa before losing to Australia in the final.

The innings was remarkable because Guptill had made three ducks during the group stage of that tournament. He finished the competition with 547 runs, the most by any batter in the 2015 edition. His 237 not out also became the second-highest individual score in men’s ODI cricket at the time, behind Rohit Sharma’s 264.

Chris Gayle had earlier become the first player to score a World Cup double century, making 215 in the same 2015 tournament. Guptill’s 237 surpassed that mark and remains the World Cup record.
