What rule decided the 2019 Cricket World Cup final after the match and Super Over were tied?

The story behind the answer

Boundary countback decided the 2019 Cricket World Cup final after the match and Super Over were tied.

England and New Zealand both scored 241 in their 50-over innings at Lord’s on 14 July 2019. Their Super Over also ended level at 15 runs each, so the tournament’s tie-break rule compared the number of boundaries scored during the match.

England had hit 26 boundaries to New Zealand’s 17, giving England the title. It was the first Cricket World Cup final—and the first ODI—to require a Super Over, and the only one decided by boundary countback.

The finish became controversial because some players and commentators considered boundary totals an arbitrary way to settle a final. The ICC subsequently scrapped the rule. Under the revised approach, tied knockout matches continue with additional Super Overs until one team wins. That later policy change does not alter the historical answer for 2019.
