After the 2012 U.S. National Championships in St. Louis, Biles was selected for the U.S. Junior National Team by a committee headed by Márta Károlyi. At the championships, Biles finished third in the junior all-around and placed first on vault, results that helped establish her as one of the country’s leading young gymnasts.

Károlyi’s role is sometimes confused with that of Biles’s personal coach, Aimee Boorman. Boorman coached Biles during her formative years, while Károlyi served in the national-team system as the U.S. National Team Coordinator. The two women therefore had different responsibilities.

Károlyi held the coordinator role from 2001 through 2016. During that period, she was a central figure in selecting and managing U.S. national teams, including the junior and senior pipelines that preceded Biles’s later world and Olympic success.
