Who has served as Hermès’s artistic director since 2005?

The story behind the answer

Pierre-Alexis Dumas has served as Hermès’s artistic director since 2005.

Dumas is a sixth-generation member of the Hermès family and a descendant of founder Thierry Hermès. Before taking the artistic-director role, he worked in several parts of the company and developed experience in its leather-goods and creative operations.

His position covers the overall artistic direction of the house, including coordination among leather goods, silk, fashion, jewelry, watches, homeware, and other categories. He is distinct from Axel Dumas, his cousin, who became Hermès’s chief executive in 2013.

The family connection is significant because Hermès remains controlled by descendants of the founding family, even though the company is publicly listed. Dumas’s role therefore combines creative oversight with the long-term continuity of the brand’s visual and craft traditions.
