Who gave Shadow its only Formula One championship race win at the 1977 Austrian Grand Prix?

The story behind the answer

Alan Jones gave Shadow its only Formula One championship race win at the 1977 Austrian Grand Prix.

The race was held on 14 August 1977 at the Österreichring, a fast circuit in Styria. Jones drove a Shadow DN8 powered by a Ford-Cosworth engine and won from 14th on the grid. Niki Lauda finished second for Ferrari, while Hans-Joachim Stuck took third for Brabham-Alfa Romeo.

The victory was especially important because it was Jones's first Formula One win. He would later become world champion with Williams in 1980, but the Austrian result was his breakthrough victory. It also remains Shadow's only win in the team's eight-year Formula One history.

A common mix-up is to associate the race with Lauda because he was the local hero and started from pole position. However, Lauda could not convert pole into victory. Tom Pryce was another notable Shadow driver, but he did not win this race; Jones was the driver who delivered the team's sole championship triumph.
