Who founded Wendy’s in Columbus, Ohio, in 1969?

The story behind the answer

Dave Thomas founded Wendy’s in Columbus, Ohio, in 1969. He named the restaurant after his fourth child, Melinda Lou “Wendy” Thomas, whose childhood nickname became the brand’s name.

Thomas had extensive restaurant experience before opening Wendy’s. He had worked with Colonel Harland Sanders and helped improve Kentucky Fried Chicken’s operations before launching his own chain. Wendy’s became known for square hamburgers, made-to-order preparation, and the “Where’s the beef?” advertising campaign.

Wendy’s first restaurant opened on November 15, 1969. The company grew through franchising and became one of the largest hamburger chains in the world. A common mix-up is attributing Wendy’s founding to Colonel Sanders; Sanders influenced Thomas’s career, but Thomas founded Wendy’s himself.
