Who founded the social networking site Facebook?

The story behind the answer

Mark Zuckerberg founded Facebook in 2004 with several Harvard classmates and roommates. He launched the site, originally called “TheFacebook,” on February 4, 2004, while he was a student at Harvard College.

Zuckerberg was the principal programmer and public face of the project, but Facebook was not created entirely alone. Eduardo Saverin, Andrew McCollum, Dustin Moskovitz, and Chris Hughes helped establish and develop the early company. For a quiz asking who founded Facebook, however, Mark Zuckerberg is the standard canonical answer.

The service initially served only Harvard students, then expanded to other universities in the United States and Canada. In 2005, the company removed “The” from its name after acquiring the Facebook.com domain. It eventually opened registration more broadly to people aged 13 and older.

Some accounts also mention the Winklevoss twins and Divya Narendra because of a later dispute over the idea for a Harvard social network. That controversy does not change Zuckerberg’s status as Facebook’s co-founder and launch leader.
