Who founded the punk label Dischord Records with Ian MacKaye?
Answer
Jeff Nelson
Answer
Jeff Nelson
Jeff Nelson founded Dischord Records with Ian MacKaye.
Jeff Nelson and Ian MacKaye established Dischord Records in Washington, D.C., in 1980. They created the label to document the local punk scene, beginning with the self-released “Minor Disturbance” EP by The Teen Idles. Nelson played drums in The Teen Idles, while MacKaye was the group’s singer and later became a central figure in Minor Threat and Fugazi.
Dischord developed a reputation for affordable releases, direct distribution, and strong independence from major-label business models. The label went on to issue records by influential Washington bands including Government Issue, Rites of Spring, Embrace, and Dag Nasty. Although MacKaye is often most closely associated with Dischord, Nelson was a co-founder and an important early organizer.
