Who founded the Miss World beauty pageant in the United Kingdom in 1951?

The story behind the answer

Eric Morley founded the Miss World beauty pageant in the United Kingdom in 1951.

Morley was an English television and entertainment executive associated with Mecca Leisure. He first organized the “Festival Bikini Contest” as part of the Festival of Britain celebrations in London. International contestants took part, and newspapers began calling the event “Miss World.”

The contest was initially conceived partly as a promotional event for the recently introduced bikini. Sweden’s Kerstin “Kiki” Håkansson won the inaugural title, and her bikini-clad crowning caused controversy, including criticism from religious leaders. Morley nevertheless developed the event into an annual international pageant.

A common mix-up is confusing Miss World with Miss Universe. Miss Universe began in the United States in 1952, a year after Morley’s first Miss World event. After Morley’s death in 2000, his widow, Julia Morley, became closely associated with leading the organization.
