Who founded the microblogging platform Tumblr in 2007? David Karp founded Tumblr in 2007.

Karp began developing Tumblr during a gap between contracts at his software consultancy, Davidville. He worked with engineer Marco Arment on a short-form blogging service inspired by “tumblelogs,” which mixed brief posts, links, images, quotations, and other media. Tumblr launched in February 2007 and quickly attracted thousands of users.

Karp became Tumblr’s public face and served as its chief executive for much of the company’s early growth. In 2013, Yahoo acquired Tumblr for approximately $1.1 billion, while Karp remained CEO. He announced his departure in 2017.

Marco Arment was an important early engineer and collaborator, but David Karp is the founder named in the standard historical account. Tumblr is also sometimes confused with Twitter because both are associated with short-form online publishing; however, Twitter was co-founded by Jack Dorsey, Evan Williams, Biz Stone, and Noah Glass, while Tumblr’s canonical founder is David Karp.
