Who founded the Ford Motor Company in 1903?

The story behind the answer

Henry Ford founded the Ford Motor Company in 1903. The company was incorporated on June 16, 1903, in Detroit, Michigan, with Ford’s engineering and automotive ambitions backed by a group of investors.

Ford was the company’s central founder and public driving force, but he did not finance the venture alone. Twelve investors contributed capital, including John and Horace Dodge, who later established the Dodge Brothers company. Local banker John S. Gray became Ford’s first president, while Ford served as vice president and chief engineer before later taking a larger leadership role.

The company’s early success came from producing practical automobiles and improving manufacturing methods. Ford’s Model T, introduced in 1908, became the landmark product that made automobiles more accessible. The moving assembly line, adopted at Ford’s Highland Park plant in 1913, sharply reduced production time and helped popularize mass automobile ownership.

A common mix-up is confusing Ford Motor Company with the earlier Henry Ford Company, founded in 1901. That earlier business became Cadillac after Ford’s departure; the Ford Motor Company was the separate enterprise launched in 1903.
