Who founded the fast-food chain Wendy’s in 1969?

The story behind the answer

Dave Thomas founded the fast-food chain Wendy’s in 1969.

Thomas opened the first Wendy’s restaurant in Columbus, Ohio, naming the company after his fourth child, Melinda Lou “Wendy” Thomas. The restaurant introduced square hamburger patties, a visual feature that distinguished the brand from many competitors.

Before founding Wendy’s, Dave Thomas worked in the restaurant industry and became involved with Kentucky Fried Chicken. His experience there helped him understand standardized operations and franchising, both of which were central to Wendy’s later growth.

People sometimes confuse Wendy’s founder with Ray Kroc, who expanded McDonald’s, or with Colonel Harland Sanders, who founded KFC. Thomas was Wendy’s founder and later became one of the best-known advertising spokespeople in the restaurant business.
