Who founded the art collection that became the Peggy Guggenheim Collection?

The story behind the answer

Peggy Guggenheim founded the art collection that became the Peggy Guggenheim Collection.

Born Marguerite Guggenheim, Peggy Guggenheim became an important patron and collector of modern art. She opened the Art of This Century gallery in New York in 1942, where she displayed European and American avant-garde artists.

After the Second World War, Guggenheim moved to Venice and established her home and collection at Palazzo Venier dei Leoni on the Grand Canal. She lived there for decades and presented works by artists including Pablo Picasso, Jackson Pollock, and Joan Miró.

The collection is distinct from Solomon R. Guggenheim’s original nonobjective-art collection, even though both were connected to the Guggenheim family. Peggy’s collection is especially associated with European modernism and the development of abstract and surrealist art.
