Who founded NASCAR in 1948?
Answer
Bill France Sr.
Answer
Bill France Sr.
Bill France Sr. founded NASCAR in 1948.
France, whose full name was William Henry Getty France, was a race driver, promoter, and mechanic who moved to Daytona Beach in 1935. He saw that stock-car racing lacked consistent rules and that drivers were vulnerable to promoters who failed to pay promised winnings.
On December 14, 1947, France brought drivers, mechanics, and car owners together at the Streamline Hotel in Daytona Beach, Florida. Their discussions focused on uniform rules, insurance, and guaranteed purses. The National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing was formally established on February 21, 1948.
Bill France Jr. is a frequent mix-up because he later led NASCAR and succeeded his father, but he did not found the organization. France Sr. also helped establish Daytona International Speedway, which opened in 1959 and became home to the Daytona 500.
