Who founded Lollapalooza, whose 2026 Chicago edition runs in late July and early August?

The story behind the answer

Lollapalooza was founded by Perry Farrell.

Farrell, the singer of Jane’s Addiction, conceived Lollapalooza in 1991 as a farewell tour for his band. Rather than presenting only one style of rock, the first tour assembled a deliberately diverse lineup that reflected the alternative-music culture of the period.

The festival later evolved from a touring event into an annual Chicago festival. In 2005, Farrell and the William Morris Agency partnered with Capital Sports Entertainment, now associated with C3 Presents, to establish the event in Grant Park. Live Nation later acquired a controlling interest in C3 Presents.

Michael Lang is best known as a co-organizer of Woodstock, Billy Corgan founded and fronted the Smashing Pumpkins, and Marc Geiger was a music-industry executive. None is the canonical founder of Lollapalooza.
