Who founded Augsburg’s Fuggerei social housing complex in 1521?

The story behind the answer

Jakob Fugger founded Augsburg’s Fuggerei social housing complex in 1521.

Fugger was a German merchant, banker, and member of the influential Fugger family. He established the Fuggerei as a charitable settlement for poor Catholic citizens of Augsburg. Residents were expected to pray daily for the Fugger family, a condition that remains part of the settlement’s traditional rules.

The Fuggerei was built during a period when Augsburg was a major commercial and financial center of the Holy Roman Empire. Its creation connected private wealth, religious duty, and urban welfare long before modern social-housing systems developed.

The complex is often described as the world’s oldest existing social housing project. It was damaged during World War II but later reconstructed. A common mix-up is confusing Jakob Fugger with other members of the Fugger banking dynasty, including his nephew Anton Fugger, who continued the family’s business and philanthropy.
