Who first showed Georgia O'Keeffe's abstract charcoal drawings to Alfred Stieglitz?
Answer
Anita Pollitzer
Answer
Anita Pollitzer
Anita Pollitzer first showed Georgia O'Keeffe's abstract charcoal drawings to Alfred Stieglitz.
Pollitzer was an artist and photographer who had studied with O'Keeffe at the University of Virginia. In 1916, she took a selection of O'Keeffe's drawings to New York and showed them to Stieglitz, the influential photographer and owner of the 291 gallery. Stieglitz was impressed by the work and exhibited it without O'Keeffe's initial permission.
That encounter helped launch O'Keeffe's professional relationship with Stieglitz and led to her first solo exhibition in 1917. Pollitzer later became an important advocate for O'Keeffe and wrote a biography of her. The story is sometimes simplified as though Stieglitz discovered O'Keeffe independently, but Pollitzer's role in bringing the drawings to him was central.
