Who ended Rafael Nadal's unbeaten French Open run in the 2009 fourth round?
Answer
Robin Soderling
Answer
Robin Soderling
Robin Soderling ended Rafael Nadal's unbeaten French Open run in the 2009 fourth round.
The Swedish player, seeded 23rd, beat the defending champion 6–2, 6–7(2), 6–4, 7–6(2) on 31 May 2009. It was Nadal's first defeat at Roland-Garros since his tournament debut in 2005 and ended a 31-match winning streak at the event.
The upset was remarkable because Nadal had won the previous four French Open titles and had never lost a best-of-five-set match on clay at the tournament. Soderling attacked with powerful, flat groundstrokes and refused to let Nadal settle into his usual defensive rhythm. Nadal was also troubled by knee tendinitis during the season, although Soderling's performance was the decisive sporting fact.
Soderling continued to the final, where Roger Federer defeated him in straight sets. Federer thereby won his only French Open title and completed the career Grand Slam. Nadal later regained the title in 2010 by defeating Soderling in the final, making their Paris rivalry a natural follow-up to this famous upset.
