Who edited all Tarantino-directed films released before her death in 2010?

The story behind the answer

Sally Menke edited all Quentin Tarantino-directed films released before her death in 2010.

Menke began her celebrated partnership with Tarantino on Reservoir Dogs, his 1992 feature debut. She continued as his principal editor through Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown, Kill Bill: Volume 1, Kill Bill: Volume 2, Death Proof, and Inglourious Basterds. That collaboration made her one of the defining creative partners behind Tarantino’s distinctive rhythm of long dialogue scenes, abrupt violence, nonlinear storytelling, and carefully timed musical or visual transitions.

Menke received Academy Award nominations for editing Pulp Fiction and Inglourious Basterds. She also earned recognition for her work on the Kill Bill films. A common mix-up is Thelma Schoonmaker, Martin Scorsese’s longtime editor; Schoonmaker did not edit Tarantino’s films.

Menke died in Los Angeles on September 27, 2010, at age 56, after suffering a heat-related death while hiking in Griffith Park. Her final Tarantino feature was Inglourious Basterds, released in 2009. Tarantino later described their director-editor partnership as exceptionally close and central to the shape of his films.
