Who donated the Stanley Cup to Canada’s top amateur hockey team in 1892?

The story behind the answer

Lord Stanley of Preston donated the Stanley Cup to Canada’s top amateur hockey team in 1892.

Stanley, then Governor General of Canada, presented the trophy after becoming interested in ice hockey during his time in Ottawa. The original trophy was a silver bowl, much smaller than the modern Stanley Cup, and it was initially called the Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup.

The trophy’s competition rules changed as hockey developed. The National Hockey League did not exist until 1917, and the Stanley Cup became the NHL’s championship trophy after the rival professional leagues disappeared or merged. The original bowl remains part of the modern trophy’s history, although the present Cup has been expanded with multiple engraved rings.

A common mix-up is confusing Lord Stanley with Stanley Baldwin or with a player named Stanley. The trophy is named for the donor, not for an NHL club or an individual champion.
