The White Rabbit mistakes Alice for his maidservant, Mary Ann, when he sends her to fetch his gloves. After Alice shrinks in the pool of tears, the White Rabbit rushes past and drops his fan and gloves. Seeing Alice near his house, he assumes she is Mary Ann and orders her to retrieve them.
Alice follows the command into the White Rabbit’s small house, where she finds another bottle. She drinks from it and grows so large that she becomes stuck inside the building. The Rabbit and his neighbours then try to remove her by throwing pebbles through the windows; the pebbles turn into little cakes, which Alice eats to become small enough to escape.
Mary Ann is not a major onstage character in the novel, and Carroll gives readers little information about her beyond being the Rabbit’s housemaid. That makes her easy to confuse with other Wonderland figures, but the text clearly names her when the Rabbit calls Alice “Mary Ann.”
