Who discovered X-rays in 1895?

The story behind the answer

Wilhelm Röntgen discovered X-rays in 1895.

While experimenting with cathode-ray tubes, Röntgen noticed that a nearby fluorescent screen glowed even though the tube was covered. He concluded that an unknown kind of penetrating radiation was passing through materials and called it X-radiation, using X to indicate something unknown. His first published report appeared in December 1895.

Röntgen produced an early famous image of his wife Anna Bertha’s hand, showing her bones and wedding ring. X-rays soon became valuable for diagnosing fractures and locating objects inside the body. Röntgen received the first Nobel Prize in Physics in 1901 for the discovery.
