Who directed X-Men: First Class?

The story behind the answer

Matthew Vaughn directed the 2011 superhero film X-Men: First Class.

The movie serves as a prequel to the earlier X-Men films and follows younger versions of Charles Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr before they become Professor X and Magneto. Vaughn directed the film from a screenplay credited to Jane Goldman, Ashley Edward Miller, Zack Stentz and others.

X-Men: First Class places much of its story in the 1960s and connects the developing mutant conflict with the Cuban Missile Crisis. James McAvoy played Xavier, while Michael Fassbender played Magneto. Their friendship and eventual split form the film’s emotional center.

Matthew Vaughn had previously directed Layer Cake and Kick-Ass. He later directed Kingsman: The Secret Service. Bryan Singer, who directed the first X-Men and X2, returned to direct X-Men: Days of Future Past, but he did not direct First Class.
