Who directed the Rick and Morty episode Total Rickall?

The story behind the answer

Juan Meza-León directed the Rick and Morty episode “Total Rickall.”

The episode is the fourth episode of the show’s second season and premiered on August 16, 2015. It takes place largely inside the Smith family home, where memory-implanting parasites create a crowd of apparently familiar characters and force the family to determine who is genuine.

Meza-León’s direction supports the episode’s deliberately chaotic visual rhythm. The story moves rapidly between present-day suspicion and exaggerated flashbacks, imitating a clip show while making each invented memory part of the central mystery. The confined setting also lets the episode emphasize visual gags, escalating paranoia, and sudden character reveals.

Viewers sometimes confuse the directing credit with the writing credit: Mike McMahan wrote the episode. Other listed names, including Bryan Newton, Stephen Sandoval, and Dominic Polcino, directed different Rick and Morty episodes, not this one. “Total Rickall” is also remembered for introducing Mr. Poopybutthole.
