Who directed the music video for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ “Don’t Come Around Here No More”?

The story behind the answer

Jeff Stein directed Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ music video for “Don’t Come Around Here No More.”

Released in 1985, the video builds on the imagery of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Tom Petty appears as the Mad Hatter, while the narrative turns a woman into a cake that the characters eat. The surreal concept made the video especially memorable during MTV’s highly visual 1980s period.

The song itself was written by Tom Petty and Dave Stewart of Eurythmics. Its unusual sound and theatrical video helped it become one of Petty’s signature MTV-era releases. Viewers sometimes attribute the direction to Stewart because of his involvement in the songwriting and recording, but Jeff Stein directed the video.
