Anthony Hemingway
Answer
Anthony Hemingway
Who directed the George Lucas-produced war film Red Tails? Anthony Hemingway directed it. The 2012 film was Hemingway’s feature directorial debut and dramatizes the Tuskegee Airmen, the African-American pilots who served in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II.
George Lucas had developed the project since around 1988 through Lucasfilm. He served as an executive producer and personally financed much of the production after studios hesitated to back a war film with a predominantly Black cast. Lucas also directed additional reshoots in 2010, while Aaron McGruder supplied rewrites for that material.
Those reshoots can cause confusion, but they do not change the film’s credited primary director: Anthony Hemingway. The film was produced by Lucasfilm and distributed by 20th Century Fox, and it stars Terrence Howard, Cuba Gooding Jr., Nate Parker, David Oyelowo, and others.
