Who directed the film Pokémon Detective Pikachu?

The story behind the answer

Rob Letterman directed the film Pokémon Detective Pikachu.

Released in 2019, the film was the first live-action film based on the Pokémon franchise. Letterman also co-wrote the screenplay with Dan Hernandez, Benji Samit, and Derek Connolly.

The story follows Tim Goodman, who teams up with a talking Detective Pikachu to investigate the disappearance of Tim’s father. Ryan Reynolds provided Detective Pikachu’s voice and motion-capture performance, while Justice Smith played Tim. Their roles can sometimes cause viewers to mistake Reynolds for the director.

The film was loosely based on the 2016 video game Detective Pikachu rather than directly adapting the main anime storyline about Ash Ketchum. It was released in Japan on May 3, 2019, and in the United States on May 10. Its live-action setting combined human actors with computer-generated Pokémon.
