The 1998 Pokémon Trading Card Game video game featured 226 cards.
Developed by Hudson Soft and Creatures for the Game Boy Color, the game adapted the tabletop card game into a role-playing adventure. Players travel through the game world, challenge Club Masters, build decks, and earn booster packs as they progress.
Its card pool included cards from the first three physical sets, along with cards exclusive to the digital game. That is why the total is larger than the 151 Pokémon species from Generation I: the figure counts cards, not unique Pokémon species.
The game was released in Japan in December 1998 and internationally in 2000. It had a Japan-exclusive sequel, Pokémon Card GB2: Great Rocket-Dan Strikes Back, which expanded the card total to 445. The sequel was not released officially in North America or Europe.
