Who directed the film Coco?

The story behind the answer

Lee Unkrich directed the film Coco.

Unkrich was a longtime Pixar filmmaker before making Coco. He joined Pixar in the 1990s and worked on major productions including Toy Story 2, Monsters, Inc., Finding Nemo, and Toy Story 3. He directed Toy Story 3, which won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature before Coco entered production.

Coco was also co-directed by Adrian Molina, who served as a writer and key creative contributor. The film’s story was developed from an original idea by Unkrich and collaborators, while Molina and Matthew Aldrich wrote the screenplay. That division is why some listings mention both Unkrich and Molina, but the standard single-answer response to “Who directed Coco?” is Lee Unkrich.

The alternatives are other prominent Pixar names, which makes them tempting distractors. Brad Bird directed The Incredibles, John Lasseter directed Toy Story, and Pete Docter directed Monsters, Inc. and Up.
