Who directed the BBC Sherlock episode “The Abominable Bride”?
Answer
Douglas Mackinnon
Answer
Douglas Mackinnon
Douglas Mackinnon directed the BBC Sherlock episode “The Abominable Bride.”
The episode was broadcast as a standalone special on 1 January 2016. Although most of the series is set in modern London, its central mystery places Sherlock and Watson in a Victorian version of the Holmes world, linking the special to the era of Arthur Conan Doyle’s original stories.
Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss wrote the episode. Its framing device moves between historical imagery and the contemporary series, allowing the production to explore how Sherlock’s mind interprets a case while also serving the ongoing story.
Douglas Mackinnon directed this special after directing the series 3 episode “The Sign of Three.” He is sometimes confused with Paul McGuigan, who directed several earlier Sherlock episodes, including “A Study in Pink” and “A Scandal in Belgravia.”
