Answer
Lin-Manuel Miranda
Answer
Lin-Manuel Miranda
Lin-Manuel Miranda directed the 2021 musical film Tick, Tick... Boom!.
The movie marked Miranda's feature directorial debut. It adapts Jonathan Larson's autobiographical stage work about Jon, a young composer approaching his 30th birthday while struggling to establish himself in New York theater. Andrew Garfield plays the fictionalized Larson, with the story balancing creative ambition, financial pressure, relationships, and the fear of running out of time.
Steven Levenson wrote the screenplay, and the film was produced by Imagine Entertainment and Julie Oh's 5000 Broadway Productions, among others. Miranda had a personal connection to the material: he had seen the stage musical and later performed in a 2014 New York City Center production, which helped lead to the film adaptation.
The film premiered at AFI Fest in November 2021, received a limited theatrical release, and then arrived on Netflix. Garfield earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor, while the film was also nominated for Film Editing. Miranda's direction combines staged musical sequences with a close portrait of Larson's artistic life.
