What 1951 musical film starring Gene Kelly and Leslie Caron is set in Paris?

The story behind the answer

The 1951 musical film starring Gene Kelly and Leslie Caron that is set in Paris is An American in Paris.

Directed by Vincente Minnelli for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, the film follows Jerry Mulligan, an American painter living in postwar Paris, and his romance with Lise Bouvier, played by Leslie Caron in her film debut. Oscar Levant, Georges Guétary, and Nina Foch also appear.

The movie was built around music by George Gershwin, including his 1928 orchestral tone poem An American in Paris. Its celebrated climax is a nearly 17-minute ballet sequence featuring Kelly and Caron, with sets inspired by French artists such as Renoir, Utrillo, Rousseau, and Toulouse-Lautrec.

A common mix-up is confusing it with Singin' in the Rain, another famous Gene Kelly musical released in 1952. An American in Paris won six Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and was later selected for preservation in the National Film Registry.
