La La Land won six Oscars at the 89th Academy Awards. The 2016 musical received 14 nominations, tying the record for the most nominations by a film with All About Eve and Titanic at that time.
Its victories included Best Director for Damien Chazelle, Best Actress for Emma Stone, Best Cinematography, Best Original Score, Best Original Song for “City of Stars,” and Best Production Design. Ryan Gosling was nominated for Best Actor but did not win.
The film follows aspiring actress Mia and jazz musician Sebastian, played by Stone and Gosling, as they pursue their careers and relationship in Los Angeles. Chazelle’s film combines contemporary romance with visual and musical references to classic Hollywood musicals.
A major source of confusion is Best Picture: La La Land was nominated but lost to Moonlight. The famous envelope mix-up at the ceremony briefly caused the wrong film to be announced, but it did not change La La Land’s official total of six wins.
